Add a new product to Shopify
To begin, you will need to log in to your Shopify account. When you log in, simply enter your store address, email address, and password.
If you plan on logging in quite often and do not share your computer or phone with anyone, you can click “remember me” for quicker access next time.
Browse for the Products tab under the Search option on your account. When you click this, you will have options such as “Add a product” or “Import products.”
Click “Add a product” and you will be directed to the product page.
Adding product details
Once you reach the product page, you will need to add information and descriptions about your products. This information will contain its product title, product type, description, and vendor.
When you enter the title of your product, you need to describe what you’re selling. For example, if you are selling a woman’s t-shirt, you may entitle it “Orange Women’s T-Shirt with a Sunflower Design.”
These titles are best if they are kept short and sweet to get straight to the point. Your customers should have all the necessary information on the product without being overwhelmed.
Furthermore, every product’s title should have a similar format. If you mention color or the design in one title, do the same for every one.
Entering information for the product type is quite straightforward. All you have to do is enter a word or term which places the product into a distinct category. For example, if you’re adding a product page for jackets, just add “Jackets” or “Women’s Jackets.”
One of the most important parts of setting up your products is the description. This is where you can draw in your audience’s attention and convince them that they must have whatever you’re selling.
A great product description should firstly focus on the benefits the customer can get from buying your item. For instance, if you’re selling a rug, you may start your description with “This soft and stunning striped cotton rug will brighten up any room in your home.”
It’s important that this description is unique as copy and pasted product information can damage your SEO opportunities with Google.
Follow the same format for every product you add on Shopify. Whether it’s short and to the point or with a list of features, do the same alongside every product.
If the product you're selling was created by you, it’s possible to add your own brand name in this section. If the item is from another brand, simply use the Vendor section to credit the supplier or manufacturer.
Adding inventory, price, and additional information
When your product description is written and you’re happy with how it looks, you need to go to the Inventory and Variants section.
Here, you will be able to fill in additional details such as your product’s price, shipping options, weight, and SKU.
Next, you need to enter images so your customers can see what they are buying. In this instance, the more pictures, the better.
Use consistent formatting when naming your pictures and separate each word with a dash. This helps in finding pictures and improves your SEO ranking. Try to use different angles and showcase different color options that are available.
Once the pictures are uploaded, you need to add your products to specific collections or areas on your Shopify store. Use the “Add to Collections” button to place your product into the necessary category such as “footwear” for boots.
You can also add tags so it’s easier for customers to find and search for your products. From your admin panel, click on the product you want to edit and click the “Organization” sections. Separate each tag with a comma and then press “Save” when you’re finished.
Edit the search engine listing
Meta descriptions and page titles are automatically generated by Shopify to help build your presence on the site.
However, you’ll probably need to change these separately to get the most out of your SEO. To do this, click on “Product Details”, then “Search engine listing preview.”
Click on “Edit website SEO” and add a new descriptive title in the page title field. This needs to include keywords to show up on Google. You can also add a short description of the product here.
Once you’re done, click “Save.”
Publish your product
Lastly, check the details of your product pages and review it all before you click “Save Product” in the bottom right of your screen. Click the link that says “View on your website” to ensure it all looks good.
