How Do I Refund on Shopify?

Luckily, the steps for processing a refund on Shopify are not at all difficult, and we are here to walk you through the process!  

How do I refund on Shopify?

If you are running an online business, you should have a return policy. This is in case there are any issues with the products, they arrive damaged, or the customer is not satisfied.  By being able to refund or return orders quickly, simply and efficiently, your customers are bound to return, and complete the transaction happily.

Sometimes, having a business revolves around keeping your customers happy, satisfied, and hooked on the products. With Shopify, issuing refunds and creating returns labels has never been easier. You can use your Shopify admin tools to create and manage returns, send shipping information or return labels to customers, and track returned items. Once this is done, you can then simply refund the payments to the customers. 

You are able to manage your returns by clicking on the Orders page, and filtering the results with return status. In this section, you are able to create a return from an existing order with at least one line item that has not already been refunded. If there are no line items at all that have been fulfilled, then it is better to refund and restock the whole order instead.

To create a return, the process is simple. All you have to do is go onto your Shopify admin, and select the Orders button. Then, find the order, and click on the one that you need to refund. Next, click the Return Items button, and select the quantity of items that are being returned by the customer.  

Then, you will see a Return Shipping options button, where you can choose from three options: Enter tracking information, Create return label or No return shipping. If you want to create a return without shipping information, then select the latter.

If you need to create a return label, choose that option, but this is only for shipping addresses that are both in the United States. The third option is to enter the tracking number and the shipping carrier to return items from other locations. 

Once this is done, click return, and you should be prompted to create a label if that is the selection you made.

After you have made the return, you can check the status of the return and refund. To do this, go onto the Shopify admin page, and select Orders. Then, open the tab and look for the order in question. You can do this with the various filters available to find the one you need.

With the order selected, click Return Status, and you will be able to see whether the return is in process, or if it has been returned already. Then, you can also refund an order if the customer has already paid.

To do this, you can either refund part of the order, or the whole order depending on the circumstances. However, an order can only be refunded after a return, or before one is made. You cannot return an item after a refund has been processed. 

In addition, the refund can only be sent to the original payment method. If the customer no longer uses or is able to use this method, they will need to contact the bank to claim the refund. 

To issue a refund, you will need to go onto your Shopify admin page, and select Orders. Then, click on the order that you want to refund and select Refund. You will then be given the option to refund the total amount of the order, minus any shipping charges. 

You can then manually change the amount of the refund total to charge the customer a restocking fee, or to refund shipping charges if you want to. Then, enter the shipping amount that you would like to refund into the Shipping field. 

If the items have been shipped to the customer, but they have not returned them yet, then make sure that the Restock Items button is unchecked. Next, input a reason for the refund in the appropriate box, and ensure that the option to send an email notification to the customer is checked. This will make sure that they are aware that you have refunded the order. Finally, click refund. 

If you are refunding a part of the order, then instead select the quantity of items that need to be refunded, and click Refund Amount, rather than Total amount. 

Once you have created a return, received the items back from the customer, and issued a refund, the order is complete. You can then choose to restock the items and close the order. If not, you can go on your Shopify admin page, go to Orders, click on the order, and Mark as returned, and the return is completed. 

Can you refund shipping on Shopify?

Yes, you can refund shipping on Shopify as part of the refund process. Simply enter the shipping amount that you want to refund in the Shipping field on the Refund page, and select Refund. 

How do I cancel an order on Shopify?

To cancel an order on Shopify as the business owner, simply go onto the Shopify admin page, go to Orders, click on the order you want to cancel, and select More Actions, and Cancel Order.
