How To Remove The Powered By Shopify

Shopify is an e-commerce platform that allows anyone to set up an online store and start selling their products.

The platform is hugely popular with start-up businesses who can easily set up their own site, promote their brand, and distribute products.

There are also some big name mainstream brands who use Shopify to host their e-commerce sites as well so it’s fair to say the platform is loved by all.

How to remove the powered by Shopify

However, there can be some teething problems with the platform and if you’re not entirely clued up with how to navigate your way around Shopify or personalize your site then it can be difficult to get it exactly how you’d like.

You may have noticed the ‘powered by Shopify’ in the footer of your store, this is to let your customers know that your site has been created on Shopify and has not been made entirely from scratch.

Many people say that the ‘powered by Shopify’ put some customers off as they presume that the store is a drop shipping business and they’d rather look elsewhere to find better or more reliable deals.

Removing this from the footer can help make your brand look more authentic and gives consumers the confidence that you’re the real deal.

You may want to get rid of the ‘powered by Shopify’ footer just for aesthetic reasons, to try and create a cleaner design, but how do you go about it?

Whatever the reasoning behind you seeking to remove the ‘powered by Shopify’ footer, we’ll be taking you through a step-by-step guide to help you remove the link and create your perfect site.

Removing ‘powered by Shopify’ from your site’s footer

There are two methods that you could use to remove the Shopify link from the footer of your site:

  • Via the edit language option
  • Via the edit code option

We’ll be guiding you through both options, do whatever one you feel comfortable with but our guide will have you removing it within only a few minutes.

Removing the ‘powered by Shopify’ via the edit language option

  1. Log in to your Shopify dashboard, go to the sidebar on the left-hand side of the page and click the online store, a list of other actions should drop down once you press it and then you select the button ‘themes’
  2. On the right-hand side of your screen, two options should appear - one is the current theme and the other is the debut theme. On the debut theme section, click on the action drop-down list, a list of actions should be displayed and you’ll want to click ‘edit language’ on the list
  3. In the first box, named the filter translation box, type ‘powered’ and the search result will display ‘powered’ results
  4. Now go to the third box down (the powered by Shopify section) and place your cursor in the box where it says ‘powered by Shopify’ and enter a single space. This will remove the faded text that was there before
  5. Click the save button at the top right of the screen and now you can enjoy your e-commerce store with no ‘powered by Shopify’ footer

Those five easy steps are all you’ll need to do and the footer will be removed from your store. If you’re not very tech-savvy then that will be the easiest method to follow, however, if this method doesn't work for your Shopify theme then you can try the following method below.

Removing ‘powered by Shopify’ via the edit code option

If the above method didn’t work for you, then you can try the edit code option to remove the powered by Shopify footer from your site.

  1. Log in to your Shopify dashboard, go to the sidebar on the left-hand side of the page and click the ‘online store option and a list of other options should be displayed below and you should click the ‘themes’ option.
  2. Once you’ve clicked themes, to the right of the page it’ll display your current active theme and there should be an active button which is next to a customize button, click this active button.
  3. When you’ve clicked the active button, a drop-down list should appear and you’ll want to select the ‘edit code’ option from this list
  4. Lots of code should appear on your page and in the sidebar next to the code there should be a folder ‘sections’ - click this folder
  5. When you’ve clicked the sections folder, a list should drop down of other files. Click the ‘footer.liquid’ file and the code for that file should display
  6. If you’ve got a PC then you’ll want to press Ctrl  + F on your keyboard and if you have a Mac then you’ll want to press Command + F. This will open a search bar and search or copy and paste {{powered_by_link}} into the search bar
  7. Once you’ve located the {{powered_by_link}} tag, select and delete the entire line
  8. Click the save button and wait for the confirmation message to say the changes have been saved and then refresh your site to check that the powered by Shopify footer has been removed

You’ll need to take more care with the edit code method as many people accidentally end up deleting other code that is not related to the powered by Shopify footer and it makes changes to their Shopify store.

Either of these two methods will work for all the themes on the Shopify platform. Remember if you do happen to change your theme, you’ll need to perform this method again if you don’t want the ‘powered by Shopify’ footer present on your site.
