To help your products stand out, Shopify allows you to add categories (collections) or sub-categories.

Creating categories in Shopify
It is pretty easy to create categories with Shopify. Just follow our steps below and you’ll have them all set up in no time.
Firstly, you will need to create a collection for the category. This is an important step as collections will send your products into the appropriate categories.
A manual selection holds the specific items that you choose and the collection will contain the same products unless you choose to add or remove them.
Log in to your Shopify account. On the left-hand side of your screen, you will see that different Shopify features are grouped into certain categories for you to use.
To create a collection, you will need to choose Collections from Products.
Once you have chosen your collections, you need to click on Create Collections. From here, you will be directed to the collection creating page.
Here, you need to enter information into the necessary fields. For instance, you have to input your collection name in the Title Box.
If you want to add an image to the collection, just click Choose Image under the featured image field on the left-hand side of the screen. Then, select the image you want to use from your PC.
In the Conditions section, you can choose to either Manually select products or Automatically select products based on conditions.
To add products manually, click Manually select products. Fill out the rest of the sections for the new collection by clicking on the Search Engines and Visibility sections. Next, click Save Collection.
You will now see the Products section to the left of the screen. Unfold the Add Products selection and then select the products which you would like to appear in your new collection.
When this is done. Click the Save button at the bottom right.
To add any products automatically, select Automatically select products based on conditions. Next, select the condition from the list provided such as Product Title, Product Type, or Product Vendor.
Enter the corresponding title, type, or vendor in the blank field for the product to want to place in the new collection.
If you wish to add more than one item, click the Add another Condition button.
Fill in the rest of the sections for your new collection. Go to Search Engines and then Visibility to do this.
To choose how visible you want your products to be, you need to go to the Visibility section.
You can choose to set the new collection to Visible or Hidden.
You can also choose a publish date for your collection to go out. This is known as future publishing. This is a good option if you don’t want your collection to appear in your store immediately.
When completed, click on Save Collection.
Now you have created your collection, you need to choose the Navigation option from the Online Store on the right of your screen. You will then be directed to the Navigation bar adding page.
Choose the Main Menu. From here, choose any menu which you need. If it is already featured, you can check the Main Menu again and Sub-Menu.
Once you choose the Menu you will be directed to the Add Menu Items page. Click on the Add Menu Item button. Here, you will find the Name and Link fields.
In the Link field, you need to write down the exact collection name which you created previously. In the Name field, enter your category name.
Next, click on the Add button and then Save. Ensure you have saved after entering the details in the Name and Link fields.
If you wish to, you can also add a sub-category in your created category. Most of the themes in Shopify have a drop-down menu to add different sub-categories. However, before you create a sub-category, you have to create a collection for the new sub-category.
Then put the collection tag on the edit field. You can check if your theme has this option by following these steps:
- Log in to your Shopify account
- Head to your Shopify Admin
- Go to the Customize themes page and click on Collection Page in the theme preview
- Now, search for the Collection pages tab in the theme editor and click on this
- If your theme has an option to filter with tag, you should find an option called Enable Filtering
- Click on the checkbox Enable Filtering by the product tag
- Now, click Save
Once you have followed these steps, you will be ready and set. Head over to your store’s website page and you will find the new categories and sub-categories.
As you can see, adding new categories or collections in Shopify is neither very simple nor very hard. Although it may take a little bit of time to add them successfully, it will be very beneficial to your Shopify store.
